Guest Brand: Hopeless Lingerie

We have recently begun to stock various other lingerie & swimwear brands on our website, because we just love having a choice!  We picked our favourite indie brands from all over the world, including Kiss Me Deadly (UK), Maison Close (France), Love Haus (US) and Hopeless Lingerie (AUS).

But why not find out a little bit more about the designers behind these brands? We had a chat with Gabrielle, the director of Hopeless Lingerie!

Q. What were you doing before launching Hopeless and what attracted you to lingerie?

I completed a diploma in Fashion and nearly finished a degree in the Arts majoring in Art History, Film, and Architecture. I love lingerie because its small and detailed, and also because at the time no one else was really doing handmade lingerie.

Q. What was the original idea behind the brand? Where did the name come from?

My sister thought of the name when we were brainstorming. It just seemed right. The original idea for the brand was to create pieces that are sexy and fun but not trashy. We wanted to be modern but with nods to vintage, and with a focus on quality and beautiful materials.

Q. The collections have a really cool, edgy vibe. Who do you imagine as the Hopeless customer?

Young (at heart) and confident. Thanks to social media I get to interact with and see Hopeless customers nearly everyday! So I know very well who they are and what they like.

Q. What is your go-to destination for inspiration on previous and up-and-coming collections?

Film is a huge part of my life. I always look to film for inspiration for the pieces themselves and for design inspiration. I don't look at outfits literally though, its much more about a films mood, cinematography, and landscape being the inspiration than directly copying looks.

Q. What is one of your favourite pieces/sets and why?

Its not exciting at all but the Veronica Knickers in Bamboo are the BEST everyday knickers! So soft and comfortable and stay put all day long!

Q. How does an idea transform into a finished product?

I have a pretty big collection of patterns I've developed over the years so it will often start with altering one of those patterns, sewing a sample, maybe cutting out shapes or adding straps, then changing the pattern again and another sample. Sometimes I only need to do it once but more complicated styles sometimes take 5 to 6 samples to get right.

Q. Describe an average day for you.

I go to the gym at 6am most days, and I'm at my work desk by 8am. Im lucky enough to work from home so no dealing with traffic! In the morning I answer emails and do general computer work, social media, scheduling, and other admin things. I usually start sewing orders around 11am and break for lunch around 1pm. I then sew from about 2pm until dinner time 6 or 7pm. I try not to work after dinner but do sometimes do social media and emailing if it needs to be done.

Q. What sets Hopeless lingerie apart from other brands?

We are a small independent brand built from scratch, and a lot of trial and error. When I started I had no business experience and have built everything organically, which I think has really helped Hopeless evolve into something unique. My focus is on the brand as a creative expression, and I put that creativity into everything I do - from designs, photoshoots, Instagram, Facebook, packaging and everything in between. My focus has never been making sales, or making things that I think will sell. Im not interested in being a department store brand, or growing into something enormous. I will never follow trends, or buy trend forecasting information - everything is very much from the heart. All our pieces are handmade in Melbourne too, up until a year ago it was nearly all sewn by me! Now I have 4 girls who help me with the sewing part time, my sister helping with admin and emails, another helping with the cutting, and my Mum does all the accounts. I think thats what makes Hopeless special and different.

Q. How has the brand developed between launching in 2008 and now?

In 2008 it was just me, doing everything, as well as working 3 other jobs at the same time. Now (as I mentioned above) I have an amazing team supporting me. I have learned a lot in terms of fit and functionality, Ive expanded our size range, and it is very much my full time job.

Q. What three words would you use to sum up the brand?

Dark, strong, feminine.

Q. If you could pick any style icon as a muse/ambassador/face of Hopeless, who would you pick?

Rihanna

Q. A lot of your styles involve creative use of straps and lines. How do you balance style with function?

Function is debatable - different women want different things from their underwear, and while I know things like the 'ouvert' styles aren't for everyone and aren't for everyday wear, they do have a place. Some woman want things exclusively for the bedroom and a lot of my pieces are more suited to that.

Q. What lingerie do you think every woman ought to own?

Bamboo knickers. They changed my life.

What’s your lingerie style?

As you may have noticed, over the last few months we have been bringing in lots of exciting new styles in classic black, naughty cupless and shades of shocking pink and mint green. As we were oohing and aahing over these in the office (and discussing which ones we wanted to snap up for ourselves!) it became clear that, even though there is a big crossover in our tastes, the PP girls all seem to be drawn to different styles of lingerie for a number of different reasons!  From customising and styling to layering and accessorising,  from carefully coordinating pieces to nonchalantly mixing and matching, from picking out styles that will drive our partners crazy to wearing things that just make us feel good that day; we all have our own style and preference when it comes to lingerie.

So it got me thinking – how do you wear yours? Do you rock a daring seamed stocking or a cage bra strap under your work wear, or is it strictly under wraps beneath your day-to-day clothing? Or maybe you save your fancy pants for special occasions – for seductive weekends away and ‘date night’ only!  Whatever your lingerie style, I’m pretty sure we’ll have something that will suit, from the ‘all eyes on me’ to the ‘for your eyes only’ :)

Nancy

Is your workplace dull and drab? Is your office dress code formal and stuffy, or the opposite, so laid-back and scruffy that it makes you want to scream? Fight back against the mundane - they’ll never know that beneath your work attire you’re clad in shocking hot pink and daring black eyelash lace!

Virgin Rose

Keep this religious-inspired printed bra close to your heart! Featuring gorgeous red roses, soft lace print, a ghostly Virgin Mary and a faded sacred heart, you’ll feel positively virtuous when wearing this retro-kitsch 50’s cut soft cup bra, also available with matching knickers.

Heather

Silky, feminine and luxuriant, slipping into this lilac bloomer knicker and soft cup bra set will make you feel like a film star no matter what your day holds!  So what if you’re running late for work or the trains are on strike? You’ll be too busy radiating glamour to care!

Lily Open Cup Bra

For when you need to bring out the big guns – as it were – our quarter-cup Lilly bra both tempts and teases, drawing attention towards scandalously exposed flesh whilst also offering support for your curves – right up to an F- cup. A hint of false modesty makes this bra the ultimate seduction weapon!

Nina Ouvert Knickers

With built-in suspender straps, soft lace on black satin, and a thrillingly ouvert peek-a-boo opening, these briefs are serious business – elegance, sensuality and unabashed titillation.  These are definitely boudoir knickers, but hey, the world is your boudoir! Just make sure you don’t have a Marilyn Moment and walk over an air vent in a floaty skirt. You have been warned.

Grace Cage Bra

Somewhere between deliciously demure, and unapologetically outrageous, lives our very own burlesque star Grace.  A simple open-cup bra with cage straps, this design is versatile and can be styled in the way that makes you feel most comfortable – and which makes you feel most sexy. Whether layered with other strappy bra tops, worn with playful nipple nipples, or simply as is – with décolleté bared – it’s visually striking and instantly alluring. Bravo Grace!

Corsetry

The corset has been around since the 1300s (depending on who you ask) and it certainly doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. There’s something iconic about the corset and its transformative power; the styles have changed over the years, but in recent times there’s been a move towards corsets being ornate and decorative rather than merely plain and functional. Try pairing a waspie with a pencil skirt and a Bardot neckline top for instant glamourpuss chic.

Hella Body

Wearing underwear as outerwear is a smart style trick which was first popular in the 1980s and made a comeback on the catwalks a few years ago, with camisoles and suspender belts being mixed with shorts, jackets and blouses to create a look which is both intimate and streetwise.  Dress this one up with tonnes of chunky jewellery, or try layering it with sheer fabrics and belts.

Cage straps

We love cage bras at PP! That’s why you’ll find this feature on the Peacock, Anastasia, and Grace and Ruby lines. Adding a quirky twist to traditional bra support straps, this design will liven up a low-cut dress or add interest to a vest top or sheer blouse; or the Anastasia floral bodysuit could be worn with a bolero and high waisted skirt for a daring but sophisticated look. Or just with tights and heels if you’re channelling your inner Gaga…

So tell us, what's your lingerie style?

CIFF Copenhagen Tradeshow Diary

After heading to Paris for the lingerie tradeshow, we had just one day in the office before we jetted off again to Copenhagen for the CIFF tradeshow!

Not impressed by this guy on all our passes and plastered all over the venue! We don't approve of sexual assault :(

Our flight was at midday on Wednesday the 29th, so we grabbed our bags and got a taxi to Gatwick at 9am. This time we had an extra full suitcase because we were taking both our lingerie AND all of our Whistle & Wolf clothing!

The flight was actually ok, considering both of us don’t like flying AT ALL. We even got to Copenhagen earlier than planned. What was not fun was the walk down off the plane in -4C - it was so cold! Luckily we had packed a lot of layers from our trip, but of course on the plane you aren’t always wrapped up warm.

We realised that the airport isn’t too far from the Bella Centre, where the tradeshow was being held. We managed to get there, set up, and go to our hotel fairly quickly. We were staying at the Phoenix Copenhagen, which was gorgeous! You have to love a hotel that has a fountain in the middle of the foyer with a rubber duckie on top.

Unfortunately it turns out that CIFF, or at least the section that we were in, was not right for our brand. We met a few new people, but in hindsight we feel we should have done a different tradeshow as the brands in CIFF seem to be targeted at an older market and a lot more expensive. From the brands here you’d also think that all scandinavians only like grey and black! This is all a learning curve for us, so next year we might scout out the trade shows before we commit to exhibiting.

On the plus side, Copenhagen is a wonderful city that would be even more wonderful in the Summer! Luckily for us the snow started to subside on Saturday, so it was a little less painful walking around.

I went for a walk to Rosenborg Castle, shortly before getting covered in snow!

We ate twice in a restaurant called Ravage, which was REALLY tasty! We also managed to get a table at Geist, a fancy place that is said to be similar to Noma (one of the best restaurants in the world). We had some interesting dishes, including a sheet of avocado with caviar, raw beef with mussels, baked cauliflower (which was surprisingly good) and cod. For dessert, Emma tried the salted wasabi cream toffee and Anna tired the chocolate toast!

Paris Tradeshow Diary

Twice a year, we head off to Paris to Salon International de la Lingerie, to show our buyers and stockists our new collection of pants. While it might sound rather glamorous, most brands hide the parts about carting large suitcases around (or they get their interns to do it instead) and spending the majority of the day waiting.

So here’s our semi-glamorous Paris Tradeshow diary!

Just 2 of the 5 bags we had!

24th January

10.30am - We made sure all our lingerie and show pieces were packed into our 5 (!) suitcases and grabbed a taxi to Kings Cross for our Eurostar at 12.25.

4pm - arrived in Paris, building up our muscles dragging our suitcases off the train (with no assistance!). Grabbed a cab straight to the exhibition hall to set up our stand. On the Friday the hall is still being set up, especially the larger brands' stands, so we had to navigate around paint tins and rolls of carpet left on the floor!

Our stand is nearer the back of the hall, in the "Limited Edition" section (which essentially means young designer) alongside similar independent brands (next to us were What Katie Did, Olivia Von Halle, Underprotection and Beautiful Bottoms, nearby were Kiss Me Deadly, Fräulein Kink, Bordelle and Lascivious).

We set up and locked our samples away ready to just open up the cupboard in the morning. Luckily our hotel was just 15 minutes walk, and we already knew of a nice place to eat quite close by, where we were joined by the ladies from Kiss Me Deadly and Betty Blue’s Loungerie. We ended up exhausted and in bed by 10pm!

9am - After a quick breakfast we headed down to the exhibition hall to set up our stand. Wonder of wonders, the lock on our cupboard door had broken off, possibly from the weight from the samples, so the next few evenings were spent hiding this fact and hoping nothing got stolen (there’s been many an occasion when fellow brands have had something disappear overnight).

We had a good first day, meeting both new boutiques and current customers interested in seeing our AW14 collection!

One of our new stockists is Lulu Boutique in Haarlem, Netherlands. They have only been open for a few months but we loved seeing photos of their shop. We should be delivering some of our goodies to them in the next week; do visit them if you are in the area!

We met the ladies from So Lenceria, an online shop based in France. We also met with one of our long-term buyers from Elegance in Greece.

26th January

This was a fairly quiet day for us, but we met a few new people.

We met Shukeena who is going to be launching Little Black Box in September; we are really interested in seeing her brand develop! We also met Enrapture from Hong Kong, Timbree et Culottee from France and a lady from Sizem - an interesting bra fitting app.

7pm - For dinner we ventured a bit further afield with Karolina Laskowska to a really beautiful art nouveau style restaurant. There was a bit of a wait as we had just turned up without a reservation, so we spent some time staring at the live crabs and lobsters in the tank. The food was good, but actually not as good as the place we went to on the first night!

Last day of the show!

We met a lovely lady from Fashion Snoops who took some photos and asked us some questions for an article she will write - we will post it once it’s up.

Another interesting new contact was a Tunisian manufacturer; as you may know, we already manufacture in China and will be making some limited edition pieces in the UK this year. China used to be the cheapest place to have something manufactured (although we independently audit our factories to ensure they remain ethical), however prices and minimum quantities are rising, so we are interested in seeing if different countries can match or beat the price. We need to make sure our pants are still affordable while remaining great quality!

We also spoke with the buyer of Lemon Curve to see what sold best for them last season, and to show them our AW14 collection. If you are based in France you can find our lingerie on Lemon Curve here

5pm - Our Eurostar was at 7pm, so we packed up and rushed out of the show just before 5pm. Emma told me some horror stories about how they once had to queue for a taxi for an hour and narrowly avoided missing the train! Luckily we seemed to get a taxi within 20 minutes and zoomed off to the Gare du Nord while the driver started talking about all the landmarks we passed (although I only understood a tiny amount as he was speaking in french!).

There was a bit of chaos getting our luggage through the security checks. They had a upwards sloping baggage belt, which appeared to have no grip and caused our heavy suitcases to slide back down towards us. Of course nobody else made a move to help us, so we had to guide the suitcases into the scanner ourselves.

Ironically, the only people that helped us onto the train with our bags were British. To finish off the show we both had separate arguments with people, one about the toilet and one about seats!

It was an exhausting mode of travel, that’s for sure!
